James Peter Brown is a highly accomplished composer and sound designer known for his emotive sonic landscapes and sensitive collaborations across the full spectrum of live and recorded sound including theatre, film, documentaries, animation, video games, and virtual reality.
His collaborative approach is anchored in the relational and evolves in concert with the conceptual development of the work, driven by a strong connection between the material and sound, ensuring a seamless integration of audio and visual elements.
Throughout James’ extensive professional experience, he has nurtured a wide range of creative endeavours, both in Australia and overseas, including several high-profile collaborations and significant artistic partnerships. Each of these demonstrate his increasing demand, adeptness and responsiveness to the creative work.
Ongoing artistic collaborations include artists and companies such as Sydney Theatre Company (Lord of the Flies, Mosquitoes, The Deep Blue Sea, The Real Thing, Home I’m Darling), Victoria Hunt (Tangi Wai, KŌIWI, Copper Promises), ERTH (Duba, Badu, Winter Camp, The Liminal Hour, Prehistoric Aquarium VR), SOIT (The Lee Ellroy Show, Messiah Run, We Was Them, Nomads), POST (Ich Nibber Dibber, Oedipus Schmoedipus) and Kristina Chan (A Faint Existence, Mountain, Brightness).
His commercial work includes compositions for global brands such as Heinz, Bethesda, Atlassian, Dermalogica, Giff Gaff, and Greenpeace.
Educated at Sydney College of the Arts and Sydney University, Brown holds a visual arts degree and a Master’s in Acoustic Physics. He is committed to industry diversity, having initiated in 2020 an ongoing mentorship program for BIPOC composers and sound designers to assist them entering the Australian Screen and Stage industries. Currently based in Sydney, Australia, Brown continues his practice-based research, exploring the intersections of sound, technology, and human experience across various artistic and commercial platforms.
